Players who want to represent the Fiji Airways Flying Fijians must be prepared to work hard and lift their game, says the head coach.

Speaking to SUNsports, New Zealander Vern Cotter said, players’ either they are overseas-based or playing locally must have it in them to go for higher standards.

“It’s all about performance and attitude,” Cotter stressed.

Looking to the 2023 Rugby World Cup, Cotter indicated, that players must give their all for the country and team-mates.

He is also supporting the proposed move by World Rugby to relax the eligibility rules.

This could allow Fijian players like Taqele Naiyaravoro, Seta Tamanivalu, Semesa Rokoduguni, Nathan Hughes and Noa Nakaitaci, who have represented New Zealand, Australia, England and France respectively the opportunity to play for their country.

“It would be a massive boost for Fijian rugby to bring these players home again. I hope World Rugby can see the benefits it would bring to the international game by enabling these players to become available,” Cotter added.

The 58-year-old coach was part of the coaching set-up for the Crusaders side from 2005 to 2006. As a forwards coach they won the Super Rugby title in 2006.

He had an eight-year stint coaching French Top 14 club Clermont from 2006 to 2014 and under his guidance the club won the 2009/10 championship.

In 2014, Cotter coached Scotland and led them to the 2015 Rugby World Cup before leaving in May, 2017.

He had a 53 per cent win rate (19 wins from 36 games) to become Scotland’s most successful coach of the professional era since Ian McGeechan between 1988 and 1993.

Cotter returned to France and coached Montpellier in the Top 14 before being appointed as the Flying Fijians head coach.

During his coaching career, Cotter has worked with top Flying Fijians players like Napolioni Nalaga, Seremaia Bai, Timoci Naqusa and Nemani Nadolo.
