University of the South Pacific vice-chancellor Professor Pal Ahluwalia says he is delighted to be back at work after being suspended for two weeks.

Professor Ahluwalia was suspended on pay and without withdrawal of privileges on June 9, after a special sitting of the Executive Committee ordered investigations of alleged material misconduct.

He was reinstated after the 35-member USP council in their meeting on June 19 were not convinced that due process was carried in the suspension of Professor Ahluwalia.

In an email to all staff and students of the University yesterday, Professor Ahluwalia said he was overwhelmed by the show of support by all staff and students.

“It is now time for all of us to focus on the wellbeing and future of our students. No doubt, over the last few days, they have been distracted and it is now everyone’s responsibility to ensure that they are able to do their best as we come towards the end of the semester.

“COVID-19 has already impacted on our core business, but it is now evident that we will be able to resume face-to-face teaching in the second semester. For all our students, especially in the region, provision will be made to continue remote teaching to ensure that the current academic year can be successfully completed.”

Yesterday, a delegation from the staff and students gathered outside his office to welcome him.

Union Secretary for the Intermediate and Junior Staff Union Ilima Finiasi said: “We came to meet him today and we are grateful to see him in high spirits carrying on with his work.”
