A vendor with the support of other vendors of Laqere Market have been donating to those in need. With the help of the Rotary Club of Suva Peninsula Sunset, Monica Singh has started a monthly vegetable drive.

Yesterday, about 50 vendors donated vegetables to representatives of the Father Law Home and Housing Assistance Relief Trust (HART) at the market.

“We have helped two organisations so far, and we are planning to assist Fiji Gospel School for the Deaf when schools open,” Ms Singh said.

She said she had been helping many vulnerable people without food for many years, and she was happy that other vendors had now joined the cause. Now, vendors will be donating vegetables every Wednesday.

“Rotary Club partnered with us and showed the commitment for four months by giving $100 for the vegetables, so we could have something going,” she said.

Vendor, Melania Tuisea, said she was blessed to help the two organisations and looked forward to helping others.

“Some of them are trying their best to survive and giving them healthy products is the least we as market vendors can do,” she said.

Another vendor, Som Rati, said she knew how it felt to be vulnerable.

“Whenever I give, I feel like giving more. If we help people, God will bless us,” she said.

Father Law Home sister-in-charge, Mere Lauaki, said the old people in their community would be excited to see so many vegetables.

“During this hard time, I appreciate their help towards the old people,” she said.
