Seafarers play an important role in transporting people and products, Minister for Transport Faiyaz Koya said.

Mr Koya officiated at the International Day of the Seafarers event, themed ‘Seafarers are Key Workers’, in Suva yesterday.

“Today we salute all seafarers with the respect and dignity you deserve so that you can continue to provide the vital services to keep our trade and the world trade moving,” he said.

Mr Koya said Fiji recognised seafarers as key workers, and the Government, through the Ministry of Transport, would provide seafarers with the support, assistance and options open to all key workers during this pandemic.

He said the Government had improved inter-island transportation for the maritime region.

“This is through investments in construction and upgrade of jetties, waiting for sheds, slipways, navigational aids like lighthouses and beacon piles, and assistance for the purchase of smaller boats for inter-island connectivity,” Mr Koya said.

“In order to encourage continued private sector investment, there have been incentives for private sector investments in new ships and equipment.”

A moment of silence was also observed to remember seafarers who have died.
