The cost of airfreight was an issue raised during the budget consultations at the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel in Lautoka yesterday.

Responding to businesswoman and Special Administrator Chair, Debra Sadranu, Attorney-General and Minister for Economy, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, said Fiji Airways was covering its cost.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Fiji Airways was the only airline flying to Los Angeles, Hong Kong, Sydney and Auckland carrying freight and there would be price variation.

“The fact of the matter is they are not making any profit at all, they are simply covering their costs and we are able to do that because it is the national carrier and we can obviously talk to them and they are providing very valuable services to people like you who are exporting,” he said.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said costing could be spread once flights started taking passengers.

“In fact at one point in time, a lot of the freight Fiji Airways was carrying from L.A to Nadi was actually bound for Auckland, so unfortunately we have to roll with the punches as they say at this point in time, but once we have the passengers coming through then those costs will be able to spread,” he said.

Ms Sadranu also raised the hygiene issues regarding the sale of mixed kava in the Lautoka market.

The Ministry of Health and Medical Services Acting Permanent Secretary, James Fong, responded: “They are permitted to serve mixed kava, it’s similar to cooking, we’ve decided to take that line if everybody can cook and sell food in a restaurant using their most hygienic dishes then of course the same thing applies to mixing kava for a large number of people.”
