A family of five in Lautoka are now homeless after their three-bedroom home was destroyed in a fire on Saturday evening.

Vinesh Dutt, with his wife and three children, had been living there for the past three years. He is the family’s sole bread winner.

The home is situated in a yard belonging to the owners of Singh’s Rentals. He said it was around 6.30pm when the fire began.

“I returned from Ba around 5.45pm when my wife and kids were waiting for me so that we could go shopping,” the 39-year-old said.

“After we did our shopping and were returning home, I could see thick black smoke coming from near my home. We hurried and saw that the smoke was coming from our huse.

“I am happy that I took my wife and kids shopping, I don’t know what could have happened if they were alone at home,” he said.

He said his family would be moving to his father’s home in Raviravi, Ba, for a while.

Police spokesperson, Ana Naisoro said officers from the National Fire Authority managed to control the fire from spreading to vehicles that were parked in the yard.

Ms Naisoro said the cause of the fire was yet to be determined and investigations continue.
