12 Seafarers Deny Drug Charges

The crew were charged with one count each of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and illegal transportation of illicit drugs following the discovery of more than $50,000 worth of marijuana on February 9.

Twelve crew members of the MV Liahona II, who were allegedly found in possession of marijuana, entered not guilty pleas yesterday.

They are; ship captain Akuila Cama, 69, chief engineer Sailosi Bure, 47, chief mate Samuela Kelepi, second engineer Inoke Matavesi, 36, deck watch rating Sekaia Sokomuri, 28, deck watch rating Rafaele Nakavulevu, 26, engineer watch rating Garville Qeranatabua, 26,  engineer rating Marika Baro, 24, cadet Ned Murray, 18, cadet Alifereti Senikuraciri, 24, ordinary seaman Josifiliti Baleinayau, 39, and welder Joji Vuniwai, 28.

Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara presided over the case at the Suva Magistrates Court.

The crew were charged with one count each of unlawful possession of illicit drugs and illegal transportation of illicit drugs following the discovery of more than $50,000 worth of marijuana on February 9.

Magistrate Wickramasekara adjourned the case to August 31.

Bail was extended.
