Huge Hole On Denarau Island Traps Bus

A burst water main softened a road on Denarau Island, trapping a bus in a pothole.
The Dominion Transport bus was returning from dropping staff off at the Sheraton Fiji Resort.
The incident happened at 7.15 am yesterday before the entrance near the Westin Fiji Resort.
Veth Prakash, 47, who has been a bus driver for the past 11 years, was driving the vehicle.
“The bus was empty when it fell. Another bus was in front of me, but when the bus I was driving came to the spot it got trapped, I was shocked,” he said.
Denarau Corporation Limited (DCL) general manager, Nesbitt Hazelman, confirmed that the burst water main was the cause of it the bus being trapped.
“This happened due to low density of people living on the island and many hotels are closed and the pressure has been built up in the pipes. Pressure needs to be relieved in some sort of forms,” he said.
“This is aging infrastructure underground. We will fix that definitely. No resident is affected only properties after Westin Fiji Resort.”
