While a family of eight is still reeling from the impact of the fire that devastated their five-bedroom home in Lami, they believe their faith in God helped them survive.

Everything except a Bible in the middle of the blaze was not destroyed.

Family member Thomas Wilson said he found his sister’s Bible with pages intact.

Neighbour and close family friend, Usaia Tukana, said it was the grace of God that saved the family.

“It was about 9.50pm when the family were preparing to sleep when the fire broke out from the bathroom at the back of the house,” Mr Tukana said.

“It was so fast, within minutes the house was up in flames. The family came running out and I was outside trying to ensure that all of them were safe, however they had wanted to run back into the house to grab a few items, but I reminded them there was only one life.”

The family had lived in the house for the past 21 years.

“There is a new season up ahead for the family and I admire the strength that they carry themselves with after the incident,” Mr Tukana said.

He said the Wilson family was ready to rebuild from scratch.

“Today (yesterday) we started with a word prayer and the family had begun with cleaning up the scene of the fire. It’s a new season and the Wilsons’ are embracing it,” he said.

Damage is estimated at $300,000. Police investigation continues.
