Australian national, John Geoffery Nikolic, who was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment with a non-parole period of 18 years has filed an appeal.

Nikolic was found guilty on charges of importation of illicit drugs and unlawful possession of arms and ammunition and convicted in March 2019.

Nikolic appeared before Fiji Court of Appeal Judge Justice, Chandana Prematilaka, on Tuesday.

His wife, Yvette Nikolic was acquitted of all charges.

In court yesterday, counsel from the Legal Aid Commission Thomson Lee sought time to consult Nikolic on the appeal case.

Justice Prematilaka granted time and advised to file an amended or additional grounds of appeal if needed. Meanwhile, the State was given time to serve the notice of appeal to Yvette Nikolic who is somewhere in Australia.

This is after the Director of Public Prosecutions filed a notice of appeal last year on the acquittal of Yvette.

Both matters have been adjourned for mention on July 21.
