There is no such thing as a COVID-19 quarantine compassionate exemption, says the Minister for Health and Medical Services Dr Iferemi Waqainabete.

He was responding to an incident where a couple left a quarantine facility prematurely following their return from New Zealand on May 13.

It is said they left the centre eight days into the quarantine days to aid their physically-challenged son.

They were self-quarantined at home with approval from authorities.

Dr Waqainabete has shifted the responsibility to his subordinates and the disciplinary forces namely the Republic of Fiji Military Forces who have been crucial in COVID-19 recovery efforts.

When asked whether he is the person who gives the approval for people to leave quarantine he said, “The quarantine assessment is done by Dr James Fong and Dr Aalisha Sahukhan and also the discipline forces.”

Dr Waqainabete said the quarantine requirement would be replicated in the case of complications.

“For example, if someone is in quarantine and gets unwell, sick, not tested positive for COVID-19 and is needed to be taken somewhere to recover so that the health workers and officials can keep a better eye on them,” he said.
