It was revealed in the High Court yesterday that the man who allegedly tried to murder his two children by setting fire to his house in Nadawa has a history of substance abuse.

Pranil Alvin Singh, 38, appeared before Judge Justice Daniel Goundar represented by a private lawyer.

He is charged with one count of arson and two counts of attempted murder. The alleged incident happened at the beginning of last month.

The report stated that the accused is fit to take his plea and stand trial. It also said he was aware of his actions during the incident and the use of illicit drugs prior to the alleged offence could not be ruled out.

State lawyer filed and served disclosures in court and sought 14 days to file information.

In an earlier appearance, the defence lawyer had told the court that the accused had tried to take his life twice.
