Woman Who Poured Hot Water On De Facto Partner For Using Her Hair Gel Gets Suspended Sentence

A 24-year-old woman poured hot water on her de facto partner in anger for using her glosheen hair gel in Samabula.

She was sentenced to two years imprisonment suspended for five years to rehabilitate.

High Court Judge Justice Riyaz Hamza sentenced the offender earlier this month.

The incident occurred on February 24, 2020, when the complainant was with the offender at his neighbour’s house watching a movie.

The offender threw a bottle of glosheen hair gel towards the complainant after which the complainant noticed the offender bring a two-litre jug and poured hot water over him.

The complainant had sustained burns to his back and arms.

Justice Hamza noted that the aggravating factors were the serious injuries caused to the complainant and that the frequent prevalence of offences of this nature in our society.

He said the offender was truly remorseful for her actions and had sought forgiveness from the complainant and his family.

He also noted that the offender and the complainant had reconciled. Justice Hamza ordered that the offender receive counselling from the Family Court Counselling Services in Suva and ordered a permanent domestic violence restraining order.
