Nine inmates have played representative rugby while being incarcerated since 1984, the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS) Commissioner has confirmed.

Commander Francis Kean said there were many inmates involved in sports activities, and they were in the process of collecting data on the number of inmates who had been playing rugby and boxing outdoors.

Commander Kean was responding to questions on former Fijian 7s player Amenoni Nasilasila, who is currently serving eight years for rape.

Nasilasila was training with the Namosi Rugby team last Tuesday at the Suva Grammar School grounds.

Past inmates have played rugby for Nadroga, Nadi and Namosi, with two inmates currently playing for the Wardens team and Namosi in the Skipper Cup.

Four prisoners had participated in boxing from the 1990s to 2000s, which included former Fijian middleweight champion Kuliniasi Vasu.

FCS says these inmates must undergo a process and reach a classification level as “Low Risk” to qualify for the programme.
