A 53-year-old farmer has pleaded guilty to murdering his 47-year-old wife in Kinoya in December last year.

Fatai Peni, who allegedly slit his wife’s throat following an argument, appeared before Judge Justice Daniel Goundar in the High Court in Suva yesterday.

Fatai did not dispute the contents of the summary of facts and the knife presented as evidence by the Office of the Director of Prosecutions.

He allegedly used a knife to slit the victim’s throat and stabbed her.

Justice Goundar asked the accused whether his intention was to kill the victim; the accused said yes.

Justice Goundar then asked him again what was on his mind; he said death.

The court also heard that his lawyer, Mele Ratidara, received the psychiatric report on the accused late Monday afternoon, and had not gone through the report thoroughly.

Ms Ratidara told the court that the assessment was relevant towards his client’s mitigation. The case was adjourned to Friday for mitigation and sentencing. Fatai was further remanded.
