Nemani Biu never thought he would become a Police officer after he had to drop out of school during the coup in 2000.

He had tears in his eyes when he received the 2020 Basic Recruits Course certificate from Minister for Defence, National Security and Policing Inia Seruiratu following the passing-out parade at Subrail Park in Labasa yesterday.

He was among the 22 graduates from the Northern Division.

The 36-year-old father of two children said after his parents separated, he was brought up by his grandmother.

“I was studying in Year 11 at Dreketi High School when the coup happened,” Mr Biu said.

“My grandmother couldn’t financially support my education so I had to drop out.”

He said for seven years he worked in farming and cutting sugarcane for the family.

“While I was playing for Korobui Rugby team in Bua, one of the Police officers asked me to join the Police team,” said the eldest of two siblings.

The man originally from Nakanacagi Village in Dreketi also said: “The door of opportunity to join the Fiji Police Force came in 2007 while playing for Police team. Today I hold the post of constable at Nakadrudru Police Post.

“If my grandmother was alive today she would have been proud of my achievement because I had achieved her dream,” he said.

“She has taught me that a sugarcane cutter, rugby player and a farmer can have a career in civil service.”

His grandmother died in 2002.
