What was supposed to be a typical night turned tragic for a mother who learned of her 14-year-old daughter’s death while alone at home.

Jiya Jaanvi, a Year Nine student at Labasa College, was found dead on Wednesday night, allegedly stabbed.

She was alone at their rented flat in Namara, Labasa, while her mother, Rohini Lal, was at work.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that Police officers in Labasa were carrying out the investigation.

The landlord said he ran to Jiya’s aid after allegedly hearing her scream but discovered her by the front door with her clothes soaked in blood.

Ms Lal said the landlord told her that when he found her it was ‘as if someone had stabbed her’.

The mother and daughter are the only two occupants of the flat.

Ms Lal said: “It was like any other normal day. My daughter returns from school and does the house chores.

“My landlord heard her scream and he ran out of the house to check. She was my only child. Both of us supported each other to live our dream after my husband and I separated.”

Jiya’s father, Rajnesh Narayan, 40, was devastated of the news.

He said the last time he saw and spoke to his daughter was a few hours before the incident.

At around 4pm Jiya had waved at him at the bus stand while they were both on their way to their respective homes.

“As usual I would call to ask whether she reached home safely and had dinner or not.”

Mr Narayan said he and his wife had been separated for two years.
