The Ema Muaira captained- Yasawa Marlins women’s rugby side scored an upset 22-17 win over Nadi in their Skipper Cup Women’s debut clash at Churchill Park, Lautoka yesterday.

What happened: It was a tough and physical encounter. Both teams failed to connect with their passes and displayed poor handling skills.

The hosts took the lead in the 26th minute with a try to Salote V with Fijiana 7s rep Ane Mei kicking over the conversion for a 7-0 lead.

In the final minute of the first half, Nadi prop Aseri ‘The Bus’ Galo crashed her way over the tryline with the conversion missing.

Halftime: Yasawa 7-5 Nadi

In the 45th minute Yasawa’s Senimelia Waqa came off the bench to score in the corner to extend their lead to 12-5.

In the 52nd minute Yasawa’s No.8 Akosita Lete was red carded by referee Apisai Sigalau for a dangerous tackle.

In the 56th minute Nadi narrowed the deficit to 12-10 from a Fiona Theresa try.

Yasawa extended their lead to 17-10 in the 67th minute with a try to winger Laisani Likuceva. Nadi replied immediately with a penalty try

But it was Likuceva who scored the last try in the 80th minute for the 22-17 win.

Comment: Yasawa captain Ema Muaira said she did not expect such a result.

“The girls played well. It was teamwork that enabled this win. This will also set the pace for us as we move into the competition.”
