In a time when the future seems unclear because of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kaajal Kumar has joined many Fijians who have gone the extra mile to assist others.

Supplying less fortunate children with brand new pairs of school sandals has kept her busy since the pandemic hit Fiji.

Ms Kumar is the founder of the Shoe4FijianChild initiative that has gained popularity on the Barter for Better Facebook page.

She said her inspiration was drawn from her own experiences as a child.

“I know exactly how it feels to be in school without shoes, that is why I have opted to help children of families that have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic,” Ms Kumar said.

“So far, we have handed out 25 pairs of school sandals to 25 children who we have assessed and ascertained that their parents had been affected one way or the other by the pandemic.

“All I require from these children who need assistance is a drawing and some time to talk and understand their issues, sometimes they draw up the thoughts that come into their minds and this portrays a powerful message.”

Ms Kumar said she felt the strong urge to help because children should not be deprived of their right to education because of not having a pair of school sandals.

“Through this platform I want to inspire a lot of these children.”

She said the initiative had attracted many personal donors who had shown interest in the initiative.

Ms Kumar said the next phase of assistance included the distribution of 160 pairs of school sandals.
