The Rewa football team extended their lead on the Vodafone Premier League points table after they beat Lautoka 1-0 at Ratu Cakobau Park, Nausori, yesterday.

The win has got the Delta Tigers leading the points table with 16 points while Ba and Suva have moved to second place with 12.

However, Rewa coach Marika Rodu said their lead is now behind them as they turn their focus on next month’s Punjas Battle of the Giants tournament.

“We will reset for the second round of the VPL after the B.O.G,”  he said.

“We will continue the momentum from here, rest tomorrow and return to normal from Tuesday.”

What happened: Rewa started strongly as they wanted the win to protect their lead on the points table.

They never allowed Lautoka to settle down as they piled on the pressure.

This paid dividend in the 26th minute with Josaia Sela slotted in their lone goal.

Halftime: Rewa 1-0 Lautoka.

The Blues came out firing in the second spell but the Rewa defence stood tall as they were marshalled by the experienced Peniame Drova.

Lautoka had a few scoring opportunities but their strikers failed to capitalise on it.

Comment:  Rewa coach Rodu said: “In terms of our plan, this is where we want to be at the end of round one.

“We’ve grown strength by strength.

“In terms of attack we created a lot of space upfront and there were a lot of misses as well.

“Nothing to take away from Lautoka. They created opportunities and caused us a few problems.”
