Fiji Rugby Union has applauded the Six Nations invitation for Fiji to be included in a neight-team tournament.

This was after confirmation that Fiji and Japan would face the tier one nations England, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, Italy and France in a tournament which kicks off on November 14.

The tournament will be staged on four consecutive weekends until December 5.

Fiji is likely to be in a four-team pool alongside England, Wales and Ireland, while Scotland, France, Italy and Japan would make up the other pool.

FRU chief executive officer John O’Connor said talks were underway and hopefully the borders open soon so that they can start with the logistics planning.

“This is a historical achievement for Fiji,” he said.

“ It’s just what we need and we would like to thank the Six Nations for inviting us to be part of the revised tournament.

“This is the type of matches that we need, we’ve never played three tier one teams in three weeks.”

Playing in the tournament would be a major boost for the Flying Fijians in preparation for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in France.

“There are almost 300 of our players in Europe. One of the reasons we were invited was we already have players in the Northern Hemisphere and there is a minimum need for travel,” O’Connor said.

“We hope that everything will be sorted out in the next few weeks.

“We’ve started monitoring our players in the Northern Hemisphere.

“I think the flights to Europe have already started from New Zealand and Australia.

“We are working hard in having discussions with the Six Nations organised to confirm arrangements.

“We hope by that time restrictions are lifted, we are looking forward to participate.”
