Bau Central College has beaten top academically-performing schools by taking the first prize in the Department of Energy’s Renewable Energy Model Competition.

The competition was done last year, however, it was only this year that the school received its accolade.

Bau Central College in Mokani, Tailevu, is only two years old having only been opened by the Prime Minister Voreqe in October 2018.

Three students from the school participated and received a cheque of $400 each as prize money.

Student and team captain, Epineri Tanuku, said: “I thank the Department of Energy for providing a platform where my team members and I were able to showcase our talents.”

He said the competition had motivated him and given him a lot of exposure and confidence.

The trio’s winning model was the use of windmill energy to reduce reliance on fossil energy.

They hope the project would advance further as a future model for their school where windmill energy would be used to provide electricity.

Teacher-in-charge Arvind Krishnan said the students were focused and motivated to perfect their project.

“The students went to the extent of staying back after school to complete the model. It took six weeks to put up the model,” he said.

Mr Krishnan also acknowledged principal, Susana Tagi Mataitoga, for her guidance and financial support because the three participants were raised from single parents.
