Government Concerned About USP’s Alleged Financial Mismanagement Affairs

The Fijian Government is gravely concerned about the University of the South Pacific and its alleged financial mismanagement, said Minister for Economy Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

During yesterday’s Parliament session, Opposition MP Ro Filipe Tuisawau raised a question about USP’s Budget allocation of $27,618,635.

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said Government will work with the regional university regarding the issues because there were a lot of anomalies that were outlined by the Pro Chancellor Winston Thompson and the Head of Audit and Risk Mahmood Khan.

“We need to understand how monies are being spent,” he said.

“Fiji, for the information of everybody else, contributes about 80 per cent of the total grant funding that all the other Pacific Island countries give.”

He said there was a big point of difference between the amount Fiji gives and the amount given by the second highest donor.
