Alleged Verbal Abuse Of Female Taxi Drivers

Fiji Taxi Union general secretary, Ashwin Lal, says the union members will look into the issue of female drivers who are alleged to have been verbally abused by other drivers.
This was after the issue was raised with the Fiji Sun by two female taxi drivers, who have been driving over a year in the Lautoka area.
One of them, Saleeman Bi, 45, said: “My job is very challenging, sometimes we are abused by the male drivers.
“The passengers are okay, but mostly the drivers do that, some are really helpful while others don’t accept us driving.”
Another driver, Nazreen Ali said at times such comments were passed while driving.
Mr Lal said this was only a show of negative attitude.
“It is a very bad attitude of other drivers to abuse the women drivers because they are also providing the service on the road. However I am glad to see that some of our women are driving taxis and providing services to the public,” he said.
“The union hasn’t received any complaints yet; I am here to listen to their complaints and I am welcoming them if they wish to take this up with Police.”
He said other drivers should show some respect to female drivers.
