Rakesh Kumar was awoken to a deafening sound he thought to be an earthquake last Friday.

In an instant, the rear tires of cane truck was beside his bed and a moment ago, his grandson had just left the spot where the truck crashed into.

This was the scene after the six-wheeler Fiji Sugar Corporation empty cane-carting truck rammed into their house in Kerebula, Nadi.

Mr Kumar said: “I am so lucky, If I was still there the washtub would have made me trapped and the planks could have injured me badly.”

According to Police, a 19-year-old driver is alleged to have slept while returning from the Lautoka Sugar Mill. The driver did not negotiate the bend, veered off the road, and hit the home at Nadi back road.

Police and the Fiji Sugar Corporation are investigating the matter.
