The Government has cut short the seasonal ban period on grouper and coral trout.

Confirming this Minister for Fisheries, Semi Koroilavesau, said this was due to the COVID-19 pandemic and also considering Fijians who rely on the two species for their livelihood.

“Government believes that during these difficult times we should reduce it from four months to two, hence the lifting of the ban from August,” Mr Koroilavesau said.

He also confirmed that the ban on beche-de-mer is also under consultation.

Mr Koroilavesau said the Government would continue its commitment in conserving the resources for the future generations.

“One of these commitments was of course to sustainably manage our grouper and coral trout resources by monitoring these fisheries, protecting spawning aggregation sites, as well as applying seasonal and spatial management measures,” he said.
