A 32-year-old carpenter who poured benzene over his wife and set her alight has been handed mandatory life imprisonment.

Judge Justice Salesi Temo has ordered Jekope Naimawi to serve a minimum term of 18 years before a pardon may be considered by the President of Fiji.

On January 10, 2019, at Kalabu in Nasinu, Naimawi murdered his wife Maraia Talei, 35, by assaulting her with a homebrew bucket and punched her several times.

She had fled to the neighbour’s house following the assault and Naimawi went and took Maraia Talei to their house where he poured benzene on her, lit a match stick and set her alight, while she was unconscious.

Ms Talei was severely burnt to 45 per cent of her body and later died on January 22, 2019, at Colonial War Memorial Hospital as a result of her burn injuries.
