Valelevu Fire Destroys Two Flats

The first thing that came into the mind of 22-year-old Mohammed Faruk when he saw his aunt’s room on fire at Valelevu yesterday, was to try to extinguish it.

However, when the fire was too strong for Mr Faruk and his uncle Ayub Dean they dashed out of the house to save themselves.

Their three-bedroom flat and a master bedroom flat were completely destroyed by the fire.

The two flats had eight occupants; six in the first and two in the second. They could not save any of their belongings from the fire.

“My aunt’s room is next to mine and on my way to the washroom I saw light from her room; upon checking, I realised that it was a fire,” Mr Faruk said.

“I tried putting out the fire with my uncle but the smoke was too thick.

“Realising we couldn’t put the fire out, we ran out of the house.

“I am glad my uncle and I are safe and no one was injured.

“We now only have the clothes on our backs and some that are handing out on the clothesline.

“The house belongs to my grandparents and they had gone to the market. We don’t know how to tell them.”

The house contained three flats, two of which were destroyed by the fire.

Fozia Nisha, who occupied the third flat, was glad the fire did not reach her flat.

“My grandmother is a very hardworking woman and independent,” Ms Nisha said.

“I am glad that our flat was not destroyed in the fire because we can all stay here.

“I was born and raised here and to witness the hard work of my grandparents destroyed in a fire is heart-wrenching.”

The Fiji Police Force release stated that the home, which contains three flats,` belongs to a 70-year-old. Two of the three flats were destroyed with their contents in the fire.

Investigations continue.
