Fisheries Minister Tours Ra, Promotes Aquaculture

The Ministry of Fisheries is implementing food security programmes in the hope to keep communities sustainable.
This was a statement made by the Minister of Fisheries Semi Koroilavesau during his visits to villages in Ra last week.
The minister and his officials visited Oakley Farm in Barotu, and other farms at Soa, Bucalevu, Namunamu and Drauniivi.
The objective of the visits was to ensure aquaculture farmers were on the right track and know what they were doing.
Aspiring and existing aquaculture farmers can now benefit from a Government grant to start and or extend their farms.
During Mr Koroilavesau’s visits members of the Ministry of Fisheries, staff were also handing out grant application forms.
The same forms are also available at all Ministry of Fisheries office.
“For new farmers, the grant is enough to help them from start to finish, including pond management training and financial literacy,” Mr Koroilavesau said.
“The ministry will hold your hand until your first harvest, and then hope you carry it on. “
