Student Recovers From Hiking Mishap

A 15-year- old student who sustained serious injuries during a hiking expedition at the Delai Natalau Hill, Sabeto, Nadi on Sunday is now recovering at the Lautoka Hospital.

Injured is Epeli Kunabuli, a Year 10 student of Swami Vivekananda College. He was part of a group of ten youths who had gone hiking.

His father who commented on the basis of anonymity, said, “Epeli fractured his arm, and according to his peers the incident happened at 8.30 am.

“It was not a free fall but rather he slipped. If it was a free fall he might not even survive the mishap,” his father said.

“They usually go hiking; this was the first for this year. The view from up there is amazing. They would gather and go hiking with their cookies.

“I have been to the spot where the incident happened. Looking at the terrain it would be difficult to bring him down therefore a medical evacuation was organized. I was not sure if he sustained internal injuries.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said a joint effort resulted in the successful rescue of the student. Sabeto Police Post officers were also deployed to the scene.

Ms Naisoro said Epeli fell five to seven metres down a hill, he had sustained serious injuries.

“The victim is still admitted at the Lautoka Hospital,” she said.

Ms Naisoro added due to the difficult terrain air ambulance and emergency service, Helipro Fiji was engaged to air lift the victim from Sabeto Hill to Nadi Hospital before he was transferred the Lautoka Hospital.
