Rape Accused Complains Of Cold Remand Centre

A 72-year-old man, who is due to be tried for rape in October this year, is seeking bail on the grounds that he cannot bear the cold conditions at the Suva Remand Centre.

The accused is charged with three counts of rape and one count of indecent assault.

He denies raping his granddaughter between May and December, 2018 and on July 22, 2019 in Naitasiri.

She was 12-years-old at the time of the alleged offence.

His lawyer said the accused has been in remand for one year and two weeks and has never asked for bail.

This is his first bail application before the court.

State counsel sought time to file their objections to his bail and to also verify the details of the proposed sureties.

Bail hearing has been set for August 28 next week.
