Rapist Who Fled Scene After Victim Cries HIV/AIDS Gets Six Years

A rapist who quickly fled his crime scene after hearing his victim lied about having HIV/AIDS has been sentenced to six years imprisonment.

He is eligible for parole after serving four years in prison.

Emosi Waseigusuna, 24, pleaded guilty to the March 26, 2018 offence.

On the said date at 6:15am the victim left for work and was walking along the cane belt area when she met Waseigusuna on the tramline. He greeted her by saying bula.

The victim said good morning to him and walked past towards the main road.

As she came near an electric post along the road, the victim heard footsteps and turned back to see Waseigusuna.

He grabbed her from behind and pressed her mouth with one hand.

The victim struggled. She tried to kick his private parts, but was unsuccessful and fell to the ground.

Waseigusuna then raped the victim who pleaded with him not to kill her as she had a daughter and lied to him that she had HIV/AIDS to make Waseigusuna stop what he was doing.

Waseigusuna then stopped and picked up his flip flops and ran towards the tramline.

Justice Chamath Morais said the aggravating factors were that this was the most serious form of rape and also committed on a stranger on a public road.

If not curtailed he said, our roads would be unsafe for a female to walk on.

He also deducted four months from Waseigusuna’s final sentence term considering that he had already served.

Waseigusuna has 30 days to appeal.
