Alleged Bribing Businessman Granted Bail

A 33-year-old businessman who allegedly tried to bribe Police Officers with thousands of dollars to avoid being charged for a motor vehicle accident has been granted bail.

Kelvin Vinod appeared before Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne at the Nausori Magistrates Court yesterday.

Vinod is charged with one count of bribery.

The alleged incident occurred last week in Nausori when the accused was allegedly involved in a motor vehicle accident whereby he was driving under the influence of alcohol.

He was earlier charged with one count of drunk driving and one count of dangerous driving.

Magistrate Somaratne granted bail to Vinod on strict bail conditions.

Vinod has been given bail of $5000 and ordered to sign a personal bail bond of $2000.

He was also ordered to surrender his passport, not to interfere with witnesses and not reoffend while on bail.

Magistrate Somaratne also issued a stop departure order against Vinod.

The matter has been adjourned for Vinod to make an election on the court for his case and to enter plea on August 31.
