A Nasinu taxi driver died on Sunday night after being allegedly assaulted by the people he had helped earlier in the day.

Zakir Hussein, 49, died as a result of a cardiac arrest which is believed to have been brought about by the assault he suffered at the hands of his neighbours in Makita Road in Narere.

Mr Hussein’s son Zahid Hussein, 25, said the two young men confronted their father on the notion that he had called the Police for the manner in which they had parked their truck.

Mr Hussein said the two had been given permission by his father to park the truck in front of their home. He said the truck was however on the road, blocking part of the road.

“My father had gone to Cunningham and later in the afternoon, a Police vehicle which was on patrol stopped outside our home,” Mr Hussein said.

“Then they went to the two and I think they were told off for parking the vehicle there.”

Mr Hussein said following the visit by the Police, the two men went to buy alcohol and started consuming.

He said his father arrived home around 8.30pm and as he did, the two men confronted him, saying he had made the complaint to the police.

A scuffle broke out with the two men ganging on the older Mr Hussein.

“My younger sister alerted me and I ran outside to defend my father. As I fought off one, the other attacked my father. I kept fending them off one by one until neighbours arrived,” the younger Mr Hussein said.

“The three of us were held off by the neighbours. My father was alive. He went and stood near a pile of woods near to our home.

“One of the men broke free and ran towards my father. He pushed him. He fell and became unconscious. My father was a heart patient.”

Mr Hussein was rushed to the hospital and according to his son, the doctor pronounced him dead at 9.50pm on Sunday.

He was buried yesterday afternoon.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the two men were in Police custody and being questioned.
