SODELPA Party Leader Sitiveni Rabuka has terminated the contract of youth party worker Ben Daveta, alleging non-performance.

Mr Daveta has been employed in the Opposition and SODELPA office since Ro Teimumu Kepa held the reigns of Opposition Leader in 2014.

Mr Rabuka said Mr Daveta’s contract was terminated on compassionate grounds so that he could be with his wife in Nadi.

“He had issues with his employment like absenteeism. He asked for reconsideration but I did not agree. Instead I allowed him to work the four weeks. He should have been paid four weeks in lieu notice but he has asked to work for four weeks and then leave,” he said.

Mr Rabuka said it was not a matter for reconsideration and the decision to terminate Mr Daveta, who was understood to have been working without pay when SODELPA was suspended as a party, came directly from him.

“It is normal employment rules that workers who do not measure up are given warnings and are terminated after their final warning.”

Mr Daveta’s replacement will be sought at the end of the current parliamentary year.

When asked for a comment, SODELPA General Secretary Emele Duituturaga responded saying ‘I can’t really comment on that right now’ and referred all queries to Mr Rabuka.

Mr Daveta said: “I would rather not make any comments nor respond at this stage.

“However, I would like to assure that my support and loyalty strongly remains with SODELPA.”
