The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts Rosy Akbar says cases of sexual harassment, drug abuse and any indiscipline cases in school must be reported to Police or the ministry.

“We don’t want issues to be swept under the carpet,” Ms Akbar.

Ms Akbar highlighted this during an interview in the North as she conducted official visits to schools yesterday.

She handed over computers to Duavata Secondary School, Bua Central College and Seaqaqa District School and opened a new teachers’ quarters at Vunimoli Islamia College in Labasa.

“The head of schools has to make sure to give proper records when the need arises,” Ms Akbar said.

“To the teachers, when you teach, remember you are not doing a job for the sake of doing a job, you are shaping the future of our country into good citizens.

“You and I have shared responsibilities.

“To the students, we want you to grow up as leaders to lead this nation.

“We are living in a very challenging time.

“But that still doesn’t stop us from giving you the quality education that you deserve.”

During the teachers’ quarters opening at Vunimoli Islamia College Ms Akbar said: “The construction of the quarters will be an added advantage to respond to disaster or emergency as the school was used as an evacuation centre.”

“Across the country, we work with the school management because they look after the quarters ensuring that teachers are well looked after.”

Mr Nand said this quarters were built at a cost of $50,000.
