Olympian and former Nadroga looseman, Apisai Domolailai, is going to play for Northland in today’s Vodafone Vanua Championship clash against Rewa at Gatward Park, Korovou.

Domolailai was enlisted into the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces and was away in Iraq on peacekeeping duties.

He was a key member of the Ben Ryan coached national sevens team that won the World Sevens Series and the gold medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Both teams are gunning for their first win. After the opening round Rewa was held 0-0 against Northern Bulls while Northland lost 16-15 to Nasinu.

Lift game

Macuata must lift their game if they are to beat Ovalau today at Subrail Park, Labasa.

Macuata scored an unconvincing 6-5 win over Bua in their Vanua opener last Saturday.

Macuata Rugby Union official Esava Takirua said their players are responding well to their training programme.

“They (players) are now adapting to the style of play we are introducing,” Takirua added.

Bounce back

Cakaudrove rugby coach Eliki Vakadranu said he was happy with his players’ performance despite losing to Ovalau in their Vodafone Vanua Championship opener, last Saturday.

He said they have a young squad and the players are now adapting to what is required of them at this level of competition.

Vakadranu said they are confident of a win over Bua this afternoon.

“We are focusing on key areas of our play,” he said.

“We were fortunate that none of our players were injured. If we are to top our zone, we’ll see it is a bonus.

“I want the boys to play well and to focus on their future since most of them don’t come from the same background.”

Vakadranu said they believe that the players will bounce back with a win.

The clash kicks-off at 3pm at the Lekutu Secondary School ground.
