The High Court in Suva has found a Chinese national guilty for the murder of a 33-year-old Asian national in May last year

Wang Qi Yong appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar yesterday and was convicted of the murder of Gao Lei.

The incident occurred on May 13, 2019 at the victim’s rented house in Namadi Heights, Suva.

In his judgment yesterday, Justice Goundar said he felt sure that the force Yong used to strangle the victim was out of all proportion to the anticipated attack by the victim.

He said the force used by Yong to strangle the victim to death was unreasonable and therefore he could not have been acting in self-defence.

“I am sure that a person having the powers of self-control to be expected of an ordinary sober person, of the accused’s age and sex would not have been provoked to lose his self-control and do what the accused did in this case,” he said.

“I feel sure that the accused intended to cause death or was aware of a substantial risk that death will occur.”

The matter has been adjourned for sentencing hearing today.
