A 43-year-old Chinese national has been given life in jail for the murder of a 33-year-old sex worker.

Wang Qi Yong appeared before Justice Daniel Goundar for his sentence yesterday.

On May 13, 2019, Wang strangled to death the victim who was also from China.

She was working in the sex industry in Fiji and she provided sexual services from a residential property in Namadi Heights, Suva.

Wang had been in Fiji for about a year prior to working on a fishing vessel.

Justice Goundar said the victim was a young female living and working on a foreign land.

He added that working in the sex industry was a risky business.

The court had not been advised of the victim’s circumstances at her home country for her to enter into sex industry in a foreign land.

Justice Goundar said the court’s duty was to denounce the killing.

“Yong is a first time offender and he regrets his actions,” Justice Goundar said.

“He acted in the spur of the moment when he could not control his anger.

“For these reasons, I have decided not to impose a minimum term.”

He also said it was a matter for the State to decide whether Wang would serve his sentence in Fiji or he was to be deported to China.
