The new British High Commissioner to Fiji Christopher George Edgar confirmed they will continue to help Fiji and other Pacific countries through the World Health Organisation (WHO) for COVID-19 pandemic.

Mr Edgar met with President Major-General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote at the State House yesterday morning and later met with the press at his residence.

“Week before last it was announced that there was an additional contribution of 1.8million pounds (F$4,947,449.44) to the World Health Organisation (WHO) for the Pacific region,” Mr Edgar said.

“I am afraid I can’t give a figure on how much goes to Fiji but it was an additional funding we have already put to the WHO,” he said.

“On COVID-19 pandemic we are very much working through WHO because it is much more effective if all those giving support give it through one organisation.”

Mr Edgar is looking forward to continuing the work of former British High Commissioner Melanie Hopkins who was transferred to another Diplomatic Service appointment.

Mr Edgar is looking forward to working with the Government and Fijians.

“I will start meeting people in Government and hear directly from them what the priorities are,” he said.

“We likely in general want to focus on areas where we already have an effective relationship and other areas when the opportunity arises.”
