Dramatic changes at Fijian Holdings Limited-controlled Fiji Television (Fiji TV) yesterday. The company advised the South Pacific Stock Exchange that chief executive officer Karen Lobendahn has resigned.

It came a day after two board members had said Mrs. Lobendahn had withdrawn her resignation.

One said Mrs. Lobendahn would be remaining as CEO and leading a restructure of the company.

This came after Mrs. Lobendahn, a respected 24-year veteran of Fiji Television, suddenly resigned following a tense board meeting last week.

Her performance had come under intense scrutiny from one board member, it is understood.

Note from SPX

At 2.33pm, yesterday, SPX posted:

“Fiji Television Limited today (yesterday) announced the resignation of its chief executive officer (CEO), Karen Lobendahn.

“She has expressed her wish to move on to her next challenge. Ms Lobendahn has been with the company for 24 years and has contributed immensely to the success of the organization during her tenure.

“She was the first female CEO within the organization and within the media industry in Fiji.

“Fiji TV also announced the resignation of its Manager Finance, Upendra Gounder, who joined the company in November 2019. He has resigned for personal reasons.

“The board has accepted both resignations and they will be leaving the company’s employment in early October 2020.

“The board and all at Fiji TV wish Karen and Upendra well in their future endeavors’ Fiji TV Board will be advertising the positions in due course. In the meantime, both employees will be performing their duties as usual.”

Repeated attempts to get Mrs. Lobendahn for comment yesterday were unsuccessful.

Fiji TV today

Fiji Television today is a shadow of the company that was once the biggest television operator in the region.

It sold off previous businesses such as EMTV in Papua New Guinea and the pay TV service Sky Pacific, which once spanned the region.

It did not go ahead with plans to launch TV stations in countries such as Solomon Islands.

Many of its leading people from that era have left. But one of its strengths has remained the programming and sports rights it holds.

Executives of state-owned Fijian Broadcasting Corporation have made no secret of their interest in absorbing Fiji Television.

FBC’s development has been boosted by more than $11 million a year in government support for what is called public service broadcasting.
