Rakiraki Police have been directed to provide an explanation as to why they stopped a SODELPA meeting in Wairuku, Rakiraki on Saturday night.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed this yesterday.

The meeting was led by opposition party leader, Sitiveni Rabuka. He was accompanied by Ratu Epenisa Cakobau, Aseri Radrodro and George Shiu Raj to a meeting with more than 10 people.

Party vice president Mr Raj said they were invited by the residents of Wairuku to meet with them and discuss their concerns.

“It was not a political meeting, we wanted to listen to the people and hear what they had to say about how they were coping during the pandemic,” he said.

He added that the main issue raised by the residents was that the advisory councilor of the said area was not performing well.

“We cannot criticise the Government if the people working under them aren’t doing their job well, this needs to be addressed.”

Mr Raj said they would take their pleas to relevant authorities in a bid to help the people.

Other issues raised were the lack of water supply and road conditions.

Unfortunately, they could not finish the meeting because Police had arrived and stopped the meeting as they had not acquired the proper permit.

“It was a simple miscommunication between our head office and the Police,” he said.

“As soon as the Police came over, they politely said there was a miscommunication.”

He said they had not given a seven-day notice to get the permit.

Ms Naisoro said the executives had been assured that they would be able to hold their meeting again next week.
