A bus bay has been dedicated for students of the Lautoka School for Special Education and Sunshine Special School.

This was an initiative by the Lautoka City Council chief executive officer, Mohammed Anees Khan and his team.

It was a joyous moment for the students after they found out about the initiative.

The bus bay will now be able to cater for the transportation needs for children of the school and the other citizens with special needs.

Lautoka School for Special Education head teacher, Kailash Pillay said it was a milestone achievement and an answered prayer for both schools.

“This is a big thing for Lautoka City and for the students of our school and also those of Sunshine Special School,” said Mr Pillay.

“There was no space before. Our bus was not able to park inside the bus stand and the maintenance cost to drop students was high, but now, with this bus bay, it will be able to save us costs, the severe cases we will be picking them.”

Sunshine Special School head teacher, Julia Kabu said the students would now be comfortable while utilising the new bus bay area.

In his address, Mr Khan said he recognised that there was a need for the students and he acted immediately.

“This is for inclusivity. We looked for a place that could easily accommodate them without any disturbances,” said Mr Khan.

He urged the market users and road users to be mindful when using the area
