Twenty-eight year-old Pritika Gautam was a happy mum in 2015 when she gave birth to her first child, Darsh Prasad.

Little did she know that six days after welcoming her new-born son, he would be diagnosed with the life-threatening Congenital Heart Disease.

Through the work done by the Sai Prema Foundation, Ms Gautam’s son was able to receive lifesaving heart surgery in 2018.

The family is grateful to the foundation for saving their only child.

“We were unaware of what was going to happen to him,” Ms Gautam said.

“It was a scary experience especially since it was happening to our first child. I had doctors telling me that his heartbeat was not normal and he had to have regular clinic visits.”

She said she came to know of the foundation through the doctors at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital who referred her son for surgery.

“Two days before his surgery the doctor called me and said there was a team coming to do his screening,” she said.

“The next day my husband and I went and they told him to sign a form and my son would be admitted the next day then he will undergo surgery the day after.”

Ms Gautam said she cried and begged her husband not to sign the forms because she was afraid she would lose her son forever.

“I wasn’t ready to let him go and I didn’t know what was going to happen to him. I was very emotional, but the doctors kept telling me to have hope and they would give him back to me.

“After a successful five hour surgery he was back in my arms in recovery.”

From that day in 2018 she said every minute with her now active son is a blessing.

“I am thankful to Sai Prema Foundation for the good work that they do. We also got food packs for him, everyone was so kind. They gave us hope.”
