Nanise Waqaira could be the next Fijian to be a Silver Fern.

She is on track to be like legend Vilimaina Davu and Erikana Pedersen-Baledrokadroka.

Waqaira, 19, was among the 21– member squad named by New Zealand Netball to prepare for the World Youth Netball Cup next year in Suva.

The announcement by NZ U21 squad head coach Yvette McCausland-Durie came as a pleasant surprise for the Navolau, Naitasiri native. Waqaira has been playing in New Zealand for the past five years after she was scouted by Howick College during the Pacifica U13 Tour in 2014.

She was joined two years later by her younger sister, Eseta Waqaira.

Both Nanise and Eseta attended Natabua Primary School in Lautoka from Year One to Eight before moving to New Zealand.

“To be very honest, I wasn’t expecting it at all because of how our season went this year, it’s been one of the toughest years that I’ve experienced,” she said.

“And I dedicated this to my family back home and especially to my late grandfather who just died.”

Her father Maciu Waqaira said this was a great achievement for the family.

The World Youth Netball Cup will be held in Fiji in November next year.
