Simi au sa vano (Simi I am going!).

These were the last words two-year-old Seremaia Vesikula said to his father, Simione Nadrole.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the child was waiting by the road for his cousin to return from school when a horse ridden by a 17-year-old came close to where he was standing.

It is alleged the horse kicked the child and attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. The incident happened at Nawaicoba, Nadi last Thursday afternoon.

The Fiji Sun visited the family of the young victim. Seremaia’s aunt Paulini Davila said: “I felt guilty about the incident that happened because I had arranged for the family of my nephew from the village to come and harvest sugarcane for my landlord at Nawaicoba. They, along with other families from the village, live with me in my house.

“I didn’t expect that such things could happen. It was a sad moment for us because my nephew was like a boss in this house as he was named after his grandfather.”

She said that some of the children who were not in school would sometimes wait on the roadside for those in school to finish their classes.

“That day Seremaia called out to his dad that he was going to wait for his cousin.”

She claimed that this was when the 17-year-old boy was allegedly riding his horse at a high speed.

Ms Davila also alleges that she heard a lady yelling at the boy on the horse to slow down, but a few minutes later, she heard the children were calling out that something had happened to Seremaia.

“When we came to his rescue he was lying on some stones unconscious. We tried to revive him but it was unsuccessful.”

The victim was rushed to the Nadi Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police Investigations continue.
