A former hotel employee who lost her job when the tourism industry was affected by  coronavirus pandemic, has welcomed her new beginnings.

Former spa manager at a five-star resort on the Coral Coast, Kalpana Devi, said even the banks closed their doors to her proposal for a loan to kick start a new beginning.

She was not prepared to throw away  her 15 years of experience in beauty therapy.

Her upbring in the canebelt of Nukuloa, Ba, taught her that difficult decisions must often be made during the toughest of times.

Ms Devi decided it was in her interest to start all over again.

Ms Devi lost her hotel job on April 6.

Back on her feet

Four months after, she had established Spa and Beauty Lounge at Sitar complex, Korotogo.

Starting something new was not easy, she said.

In those four months, Ms Devi spent many sleepless nights planning, and reviewing the market survey in her stride to perfect a centralised location.

“Staying home for a couple of months made me think harder and broader,” she said.

“We applied for a micro business loan.

“It was rejected on the basis that the business was under the ambit of the tourism sector.

“We sold the family car and used the proceeds and family savings to open a beauty spa,” she said.

The idea of a spa concept promised a personalised and perfect getaway for guests who needed a spa break, she said.

Business operations

Ms Devi employed two workers who had experience in the profession.

“They were without jobs too,” she said.

The lounge offers new initiatives to offer the best and affordable treatments, coupled with a membership programme.

“Follow our social media posts for our weekly specials,” Ms Devi said.

COVID-19 safe space

At Spa and Beauty Lounge, a range of spa treatment is offered including nail care, beauty care, face care, eye and lash care, massage and body care with salon needs.

There is a COVID-19 safe plan in place for every guest which is mandatory, Ms Devi said.

“Temperature recording, complete consultation forms, hand sanatiser is provided,” she said.

“All treatment rooms are fully sanitised after every treatment; all equipment is sanitised in ultra violet light steriliser to maintain a high level of hygiene.

“We offer two product lines – Pure Fiji for body care and ECOCOCO Skincare, a 100 per cent organic production from Australia which is exclusive to Spa and Beauty Lounge,” she said.

“We believe everyone is different and unique in their own way, and we personalise treatment according to their needs.”

“Free skin and hair consultation are offered to guests.”
