Retired teacher and scout master, Joji Qaranivalu, was dressed in his scout uniform as the 50th Anniversary Medal of Fiji’s Independence was pinned on him.

He stood in front of President Major General (Ret’d) Jioji Konrote and gave the three fingered scout salute. He was beaming with pride having been recognised for his effort with the scout movement.

Mr Qaranivalu was also present at Albert Park on October 10, 1970 when the instruments of independence were given to Fiji.

“I was a fifth former at Queen Victoria School. As a scout member, I was part of the QVS students who stood around the perimeter of Albert Park,” he recalled.

“We were dressed in khaki and standing barefoot.

“The 50 years of Independence is not only for the nation but for the scout movement in Fiji as well.”

Mr Qaranivalu explained that prior to Independence, Fiji Scouts were aligned to the scouts body in the United Kingdom.

He said when Fiji was given Independence, Fiji became a member of the World Scouts Bureau.

Mr Qaranivalu has been the man behind the movement in the nation for many years.

Meanwhile, as thousands gathered in Albert Park to mark Fiji’s Independence Day in 1970, 23-year-old Ratu Jo Nacola was at the marriage registry.

Mr Nacola said he was only called a day earlier to be informed that he was receiving the medal.

“This is a double celebration for me. My wife and I are celebrating our 50th anniversary, we tied the knot on October 10, 1970,” he said.

“I can never forget that day.”

Mr Nacola said to be considered for the medal was an honour.
