The torrential rain last weekend caused the Principal of Saqani High School, Isikeli Turaga, and his family to relocate to a classroom.

This was after their home was partially covered by soil as a result of a landslide on Sunday night.

School manager, Isikeli Vulakoro said: “It has been a very long time since it rained for a long time. Around 8pm on Sunday night the intensity of the rain was strong until late at night.

“At 12am the soil crashed into the principal’s quarters and the school ground.

“There is no damage to the school nor was there any fatality.”

He added that students were also sent home for safety reasons. The access road to the school is also closed due to landslide.

“I have informed the district officer and Ministry of Education, in the meantime, I have requested the people of the district of Saqani to help clear up the landslide while waiting for assistance from the ministry,” he said.

Mr Vulakoro said there was a great deal of soil that needed to be cleared before they would allow students to return to school.
