For a businesswoman and women activist, receiving a the 50th Independence Commemorative medal was a nostalgic affair.

Nur Bano Ali could clearly recall the day when on October 10, 1970, her father, Bakar Ali, a businessman, was given a medal at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka.

“Today was my turn. As I walked up to receive the medal, I could remember the values my father had taught us,” Ms Ali said.

“I said, I am doing this for you. He used to drill into us about doing work for the community and giving back.”

Like many other recipients, Ms Ali was only notified the previous night that she would be getting a medal.

She was happy and at the same time able to reflect on the proud historical heritage her family had.

Ms Ali is also the Women in Business president.

“The society has advanced and this is due to the changing world,” she said.

“From a woman’s point of view, we have come a long way but still have some distance to go.

“In Fiji, I believe that people now have more accessibility to raise their concerns through the various forums that are available.”

Of the 31 people that received the medals yesterday, nine were women.
